This Joint Research Program is an industry-academia collaborative research initiative established through a partnership between the Drug Discovery Research Division of ASKA Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. and the Laboratory of Hygienic Chemistry and Molecular Toxicology (Nakanishi Laboratory), Gifu Pharmaceutical University. Focusing on diseases specific to women, who account for half of the population, the program aims to generate research outcomes of high medical and social significance by organically integrating the fundamental research strengths of academia with the drug discovery expertise cultivated by industry researchers.
To date, drug discovery research in gynecological diseases has largely focused on life-threatening conditions such as cancer, while limited research funding and opportunities have been directed toward diseases that are not fatal but markedly impair patients' quality of life (QOL). In recent years, however, conditions such as endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy have been re-recognized as important diseases that affect women throughout their entire life course, and have consequently attracted increasing international research attention.
