At 10:17 a.m. on February 6 (Japan Standard Time), an earthquake centered near Kahramanmaraş in the southeastern part of Turkey caused extensive damage.

Based on the request from the government of the Republic of Turkey, the Japanese government decided to dispatch the Japan Disaster Relief Medical Team, and Prof. Hideki HAYASHI (Laboratory of Community Pharmaceutical Practice and Science) was dispatched as a pharmacist member of the first team.

Background

Japanese government has been dispatching Japan Disaster Relief teams since immediately after the earthquake hit southeastern Turkey, and since February 16, the medical team has been working in cooperation with local hospitals at a tent-type field hospital set up in Oğuzeli, Gaziantep, a severely damaged area. The team has been providing medical treatment to a total of approximately 2,000 people, including local disaster victims and residents.

Dispatch of Gifu Pharmaceutical University Faculty Members

Gifu City government has concluded as part of an agreement with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the commissioning of international emergency assistance. Therefore, Prof. Hayashi was sent as a pharmacist in the first medical team of the Japan Disaster Relief Team for the earthquake in Turkey.

Activities

Prof. Hayashi left Japan on February 14 and returned on March 1 as a pharmacist of the first medical team of the Japan Disaster Relief Team, includes setting up a medical treatment site, managing medicines and other supplies, assisting physicians with prescriptions, and providing water and hygiene management for use at the field hospital site.
